GREYTOWN GINS TAKE GOLD AND SILVER IN LONDON’S PRESTIGIOUS 2024 INTERNATIONAL WINE AND SPIRITS COMPETITION

One of New Zealand’s fastest growing spirits start-ups, Greytown Distilling Company, has triumphed in the world’s most recognised wine and spirits competition, London’s IWSC.

“We entered these 2024 awards after just over a year in business, and we are extremely gratified to be recognised in what is considered to be the global home of gin,” says Gavin Hodder, CFO of the Greytown Distilling Company. “Over 4,500 gins were entered in this competition from all over the world and, as a tribute to our team and our investors, it is wonderful to see Greytown gins come through with such success. In fact, Tweed is now placed alongside the world’s top 50 gins.”

“Tweed Gin was one of our original releases at the end of 2022, and right from the moment we tasted our Master Distiller Peter Warren’s masterpiece, we knew we had something very special,” says Gavin. “The judges in London awarded it GOLD with 95 points and said ‘The delicate and inviting aromatic profile opens with citrus notes, leading to a palate abundant in zesty orange and satsuma peel flavours. A long, generous finish showcases perfect balance and an indulgent silky quality, with a lingering touch of pine and musk adding depth and complexity.’ We’re not going to argue with that.”

The second Greytown winner of a SILVER medal, with 90 points, was the best-selling Frostbite Gin which was re-released based on popular demand in May 2024 after its initial run as a winter-specialty gin the previous year.

“Our customers were the enthusiastic judges of Frostbite gin,” says Gavin, “and they actually demanded we re-release Frostbite for a second winter this year. It is our runaway best seller and is rapidly making its reputation known all over New Zealand. Our ability to keep up with demand for Frostbite is being tested right now, but we are doing our best!”

The London judges of Frostbite Gin said “Aromas of orange blossom, satsuma, and white flowers greet the senses, while appealing woody undertones add depth. The palate is delicate and creamy, evolving into an herbaceous and bold experience. The attractive, peppery finish leaves a delightfully lasting impression.”

Greytown Distilling Company gins are available in distinctive 375ml and 750ml stainless steel flasks, which are infinitely recyclable, lightweight and make storing gins in the fridge or freezer easy.

Both Tweed and Frostbite gins are starting to appear at some of New Zealand’s most recognised cocktail bars and restaurants and can also be tasted and purchased at the GDC Tasting Shed, 110 Main Street Greytown (inside Blackwell and Sons), or ordered directly at www.greytowngin.com
