HOW GLASSWARE GETS THE MOST FROM YOUR GIN

What’s the deal with all those gin glasses?

Seriously - some are short and squat, others are tall and elegant. Some demand a firm grip, while others practically float in your hand like gravity laws don’t apply.

Let’s break it down so you can level up your gin game. Glassware for gin falls into two big camps: Tumblers and Stemware.

Tumblers:

  • Collins glass (300-410ml): Tall, slim, and all about keeping things chill - literally (the narrow shape helps keep your drink colder and bubblier for longer). Perfect for carbonated cocktails like a Tom Collins.
  • Old-Fashioned glass - A.K.A. Lowball or Rocks glass (180-300ml): Wide brim, thick base and a little extra decorative flair. Great for crushing non-liquid cocktail ingredients + mixing, and the go-to for a Negroni.
  • Highball glass (240-350ml), Taller than a Lowball, shorter than a Collins - basically the middle child whose shape facilitates the release of the cocktail’s bouquet - a Gin Rickey being a desired drink.

Stemware:

  • Cocktail glass (90-300ml): The classic Martini vessel. That stem? Not just for looks. It supports sipping while reducing the warming effect of your hand on the gin. Its wide brim allows the appreciation of aromas and diagonally sloping walls lets you show off your garnish game, along with helping prevent ingredients from separating.
  • Champagne flute (180-300ml): Slim and chic, the slender shape helps trap bubbles and concentrate aromas, and thereby the taste of cocktails like a French 75.
  • Hurricane glass (~590ml): This curvy profile is similar to a vase (taller and wider than a Highball) and usually home to a Singapore Sling.
  • Nick and Nora glass (150ml): Small and mighty, it has high-sided bowl - to help prevent spillages, atop it’s long stem - to help keep your Martini cool.
