LONKERO COCKTAIL RECIPE: THE LONG-SUMMER SCANDINAVIAN SIP
Share
Long summer nights deserve a gin cocktail with a name to match the season. Enter the Lonkero (a.k.a. “long drink” or “tentacle” – a translation that’s sure to tickle your tastebuds).
Born in 1952 to coincide with the Finnish Summer Olympics, this ready-made cocktail was initially tightly controlled by the Finnish government (because nothing says “serious sport” like strict cocktail regulation). Fast-forward to 1995, and Finland’s EU membership let the Lonkero out of the bottle, freely enjoyed by anyone with a taste for citrusy sophistication.
Citrus-centric cocktails demand a botanical gin with some serious personality. The Orchard Grove Selection serves it up in three 375ml flasks (Mānuka & Lemon, Pears of Paradise, Horopito and Lime Dry) all tucked neatly in a presentation carrier gin gift box.
Traditionally pre-mixed, this cocktail is forgiving - adjust your pour to suit your taste:
- 60ml gin
- 60ml fresh grapefruit juice (also try white or pink grapefruit syrup, or soda to fizz things up)
- Mix and serve in a chilled highball glass with ice.
- Garnish with a fresh slice of grapefruit.
Raise your glass and soak in the summer. Finns might call it Lonkero, but Kiwis call it a jolly good long drink.
